In contemporary society, whether individuals can do something to improve the environment has been a highly debatable issue. In this essay, I will compare and contrast two typical opinions regarding this issue.
It is a well-known fact that environment has become an indispensable part of ecological system and it has been exerting profound influence on human being. Some people assert that environment problems are too big for individuals to address while government and large companies play an essential role in environmental protection. On the one hand, dumping waste materials from human activity into rivers and streams are popular. This phenomenon can be attributed to the environmental protection law not being stringent enough. For another, air pollution created by burning fossil fuels, which leads global warming. Government can raise oil prices to curb the increasing demand of fossil oil.
On the other hand, there is no doubt that individuals have no alternative but to take immediate steps to address this situation. Firstly, nothing seems more important than raising personal awareness. It is manifest that the more automobile on the road, the more tail gas to contaminate our air. People can take advantage of public and green transport, such as bicycle, bus and subway. Secondly, individuals should encourage their relatives and friends to use environmentally-friendly containers rather than plastic packing items. As a result, it will help to curb this massive “white pollution”.
In conclusion, I take the view that individuals play a critical role in protecting environment. The ecological problems are being aggravated. So I firmly believe if individuals do nothing to improve the environment, any measures from government will be useless.
