What are the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging?

Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, people have many different ways to communicate with each other. The number of people using mobile phone to text massaging is increasing. This way makes our life more convenient and saves time. Some people like to communicate face-to-face. Others people prefer to send a text message, especially many children like using text messaging. This essay will explain what the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging are.

There are three advantages of a text messaging. First of all, text messaging is shorter than other ways. According to the article ‘SMS spells end of gd. grammar?’ (2008), communication is easier and faster because text messaging is quite modern shorthand in the technological world. For instance, SMS language use grapheme and numbers to take place of a word such as “C” for “see”, “4” instead of “for” (‘SMS spells end of gd. grammar? ’ 2008). Therefore, text messaging is an innovation of phone language and a shorter method than writing, thus old people like to use it because it is economic and fast ways so that people use text messaging to communication every day (‘SMS spells end of gd. grammar? ’ 2008). Secondly, text messaging makes social friendship stronger. For example, 1/2 young people think that text messaging on the Internet can improve the relationship between friends, they can show more enthusiasm and improve the quality of communication (Lenhart, Rainie and Lewis 2001). Moreover, some children think that text messaging can make friendships easier than other types of communication, such as face-to-face (Lenhart, Rainie and Lewis 2001). It is because we do not need to consider our appearance or what people say about you (Lenhart, Rainie and Lewis 2001).
