The Spanish American War started on April 25 1898.It was a war of two great powers, neither of whom was ready for what was to come. This war was sparked by yellow journalism and greed. The Spanish American War was a 2 year war filled with just as much devastation, hatred and death of longer wars.
The war was fought by Spain and the United States. The U.S. had allies such as The Republic of Cuba and the Philippine Republic. While the Spaniards had none. Uneven, Unfair, and outmatched the war began.
The U.S. had many reasons to fight. A big reason was the sinking of the USS Maine. The loss of the ship was more of a trigger than a cause though. The real reason was that Cuba was a major exporter of sugar to the US. This major bond between the two countries would make the US want to have more of a foot hold in Cuba. When the US saw the opportunity to get that foot hold by disrupting the Spanish control they took it.
While U.S. had decent reasons for fighting, Spain had none. They fought for pride. So not only did they have no allies but they had no reason. In actuality it could have been to keep Cuba that was it. They were already spread thought the world so why this one country was so important is a mystery.
Obviosly the U.S. won the Spanish American War. The reason they won was the epic overwhelming naval power. Spains navy and army were so thin from conqouring so many nations they couldn’t possibly defend themselves
