Chapter 1 – Evolution of HRM
MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN AUSTRALIA WORK PLACE
Stage 1 (1900-1940s): Personnel functions were performed by supervisors, line managers and early specialists.
Stage 2 (1940s-mid-1970s): beginning of specialist & more professional approach to personnel management in Australia. Expansion of necessary personnel functions for post-war economy (welfare, recruitment, selection, training)
* Scarcity of labour for essential industries such as munitions & food
* More women became involved
* Returning soldiers had few work skills
* Employers began to focus on the importance of a wider range of personnel functions (government initiatives & post-war requirements for skilled employees in developing economy)
* provision of welfare services for employees – a means of attracting and maintaining employees, ensuring their continued productivity
* Adoption of overseas theories – scientific mgmt., behavioural science & human relations; and emergence of professional associations & courses.
