ONOMATOPOEIA, OXYMORON AND JUXTAPOSITION




SIMILE

A simile is a figure of speech that compares to unlike things for example, ‘he was as tall as a tree’ or ‘as brave as a lion’ or ‘as good as gold’


METAPHOR

Is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is used for one kind of object in place of another to suggest a likeness between them, for example ‘Usain Bolt is a Cheeetah’ or ‘my home was a prison’ or ‘he is a clown always making jokes’.


PERSONIFICATION

This is where a non-living thing is given a human or living characteristic for example ‘the trees waved to the children in the breeze’, ‘the wind howled through the night’, ‘the time flew by today’, ‘the popcorn jumped out of the bowl’.


ONOMATOPOEIA

This is where the words being used sound like the things they are describing for example, snap, crackle, pop, bang, crash, whoosh, swoop, bong, whip, clap, crack.


JUXTAPOSITION

This is the arrangement of two or more words side by side that mean completely different things but are used for comparison or contrast for example ‘this is awfully delicious food’, ‘she’s pretty ugly’, ‘the day was black’, ‘the light pierced the darkness’.


OXYMORON

A figure of speech where a pair of words are used within a sentence that contradict each other for example ‘the boy was childishly mature for his age’ ‘you have to be cruel to be kind’ ‘you really feel alive when your almost dead’ ‘the school was growing smaller as I walked away from it’.
