Cual Soy?: Explorations on Identity in Bless Me Ultima and A Mestiza Conciousness
Introduction
Stable Context: Identity is an issue that all people struggle with as they develop and grow. This is especially true as individuals become adults.
Destabilizing Condition: However, identity is a dynamic process that individuals deal with throughout their lives.
Cost: In order to understand the struggle people face between multiple sources of identity, we need to gain a better understanding of how identity is formed and understood.
Thesis: In Bless Me, Ultima Anaya shows the reader the struggle between multiple identities faced by Antonio. Through his experiences Antonio is able to make peace with his identity and find a “middle space,” where he finds himself and does not have to choose one or the other.
Body Paragraphs
Claim:   Antonio Márez must progress towards his own moral independence and choose his destiny.
Reason: In order to grown and form his identity, Antonio has to explore the sources that are influencing his decisions of who is supposed to become.
Evidence Close-Read Evidence: Antonio is a young six-year-old boy and lives in his Spanish village. Antonio himself is not a full fledge Latino. His father had been a vaquero all of his life, "...a calling as ancient as the coming of the Spaniard to Nuevo Mexico" (2). Antonio then comments on how being a vaquero, or cowboy, meant so much to his father by stating that, "Even after the big rancheros and the tejanos came and fenced the beautiful llano, he and those like him, I guess because only in that wide expanse of land and sky could they feel the freedom of their spirits needed"
Claim: Tony is forced to endure difficult experiences too early in life, causing a premature loss of innocence.
Reason: The experiences that Tony has allow him to mature and gather wisdom and knowledge as he comes to terms with his identity.
