LEADERSHIP FOR ORGANIZATIONS
The only constant in the world of business is that everything changes. As the world of business changes, business management and leadership must change with it. Studies of leadership and modification of leadership theory is a continuous process resulting in adapting and updating these theories as the workforce and business climate evolve. Some of the major driving forces of change are globalization, consequences of increased competition, complexity of change, and decrease in hierarchical organization structure (McLaurin, 2006).
The decline in the availability of unskilled jobs coupled with the recent economic downturn has increased American unemployment statistics to levels not seen since the Great Depression. Available jobs require secondary education degrees or trade school certification due to the complexity and depth in understanding multi-dimensional skillsets to staff these positions. Three million jobs are unfilled in America because of the lack of qualified job applicants exacerbating the unemployment problems of the United States.
As job requirements increase in complexity and the education credentials of workers progress, organizational leadership must evolve to lead a more intelligent workforce. Leaders must alter roles, styles, and methods to integrate workers into efficient teams and motivate workers to meet the goals and objectives of organizations in a highly competitive, global business environment that requires change and response to change frequently. Rigorous domestic and international competition, changing global markets, and new technologies have led to shorter product life cycles (Donnelly, & Kezsbom, 1993).
Companies have an increasing need for innovation and creativity with new and existing products to maintain and grow revenue and profit.
