THE DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE,

  Richard Gordon is the pen name used by Gordon Ostlere (born on September 15, 1921), an English surgeon and anaesthetist. As Richard Gordon, Ostlere has written several novels, screenplays for film and television and accounts of popular history, mostly dealing with the practice of medicine. He is most famous for a long series of comic novels on a medical theme starting with Doctor in the House, and the subsequent film, television and stage adaptations.
  The final examination is like the most significant event in every student’s life. All the candidates were ticking the days off the calendar, swotting up the spot questions. Some of them, in order to humour the examiners, were attending their lectures like real enthusiasts. After the written examination the narrator was worried whether he did good or not. But his friend told him not to worry, because they don’t read the papers anyway. After the written examination, there comes the viva. The narrator was shown to a waiting-room, where along with him, there were a couple of students, waiting for their turn. After the viva, the narrator was even more worried waiting for the results. Finally, the Secretary told him that he passed the examination.
  In the exposition of the text the narrator presents what an examination is. He describes the students’ attitude towards the examination. The raising point of that extract of the book is when the narrator describes the process of the examination, the students‘ feelings, their behavior during the examination. The climax of the story is the moment when the narrator finds out that he passed the examination. After the big news, comes the denouement, the narrator is surprised to hear that he had passed the deathlike exam.
